We often overlook four (4) of the biggest advantages of strength training has to offer us, especially as we age, even over the age of 60. We often think of strength training for developing stronger and toned muscles with improving stamina and mobility. We might not think of strength training as important for maintaining one’s balance, cognitive function, burning calories, or the real important benefit, as an age- defying component for one’s skin.
When you perform strength training, your muscles are releasing a natural growth hormone that produces collagen for healthier younger looking skin and joints.
If you couple strength training with a diet high in protein, fiber, complex carbohydrates, probiotics, and omega-3 fats and not eating past 6 p.m.; you can have your own fountain of youth! Having your own fountain of youth is actually that is easy to obtain. This fountain of youth is not in a pill bottle or with expensive skin cream, but in your iron work.
The iron work that I’m referring to isn’t powerlifting, but with simple light to medium weights with high reps strength training. This strength training is performed with both free weights and Resistance Elastic Cords (REC) in your home or at your gym. This is perfect for those over the age of 70 to perform in their home. If you have a door, you have your workout gym.
IMPORTANT: Just make sure that you DO NOT anchor on the hinge side of the door, but on the jam side of the door to prevent the door from accidentally opening and help support the door.
Referring to light weights, I don’t even have a dumbbell (or free weight) that is heavier than 45- pound.
My Strength Training Program
Most of my strength training is performed with dumbbells between 15-to-30- pounds and Resistance Elastic Cords that I use in my MACS Workout. I normally do two or three sets of 15- reps with each set. It isn’t the amount of weight that you use but the reps that you do that actually tones your muscles and skin.

Those that want to turbocharge their workout program can include a boxing bag workout, as I do in my workouts and my video, above. The box bag workout is considered a cognitive behavior training technique that improves the lives of Parkinson’s patients. I have four (4) 1-minute boxing bag rounds that are great for developing balance and stamina.
I do a lot of research in techniques that the medical and rehab fields are using to treat Alzheimer and Parkinson’s patients. Anything that the medical or rehab field are using to treat both Alzheimer and Parkinson’s patients are great techniques to include in your own workout. Please watch my fitness articles where I highlight neurological techniques to use in your workouts. Another great neurological technique that they use with both Alzheimer and Parkinson’s patients is listening to music.
I incorporate these techniques into my workout program since I’m over the age of 60 to improve my physical, mental and spiritual health. Our fitness workout is more than a physical health benefit, but also addresses our mental and spiritual health, as well. When it comes to fitness training, you can’t separate the three (3) components from each other. I refer to my fitness training as active meditation.
Just a 1-minute workout on the bag is a full body and mental workout that is just as beneficial as any other aerobic-cardio fitness element but is very challenging. Your arms will feel like lead weights throwing repetitive punches within that 1- minute round. Working out with a bag will make those 15- pound dumbbells feel like 25- pounders.
