A Field Assessment of the CHAMPS Golf Swing Wrist Action from a Novice Golfer

I gave a draft copy of my QATR-408- The CHAMPS Technique (the Wrist Action in the Golf Swing) to my longtime friend Aaron. Aaron is, for all practical purposes,  a novice golfer. I used the term novice golfer and not average golfer, because the average golfer plays golf at least 1.4 times per week. Aaron only plays one time a year on a guys-only, weekend golf outing to Gulf Shores, Alabama, for the past two years.

Aaron has agreed to be my test pilot for a few of my QATR Golf Training Downloads. As you can imagine, Aaron shoots in the low one-hundreds. The average golfer’s score is around 90. One reason that Aaron’s score is even that good is that he has baseball background. He comes from a high school that contends in the state baseball playoffs the majority of the time. So Aaron was a perfect person to do the test pilot for my QATR-408- The CHAMPS Technique (the Wrist Action in the Golf Swing) Download, before I put it in my Online Store.

Three weeks before Aaron was scheduled to go on his second annual guys-only, weekend golf trip to Gulf Shores, AL, I sent him a copy of my QATR-408-The CHAMPS Technique, in a PDF Download format. I asked him to use the QATR-408-The CHAMPS Technique for 30 minutes in the morning and in the afternoon as relief exercises at his office.

I explained to Aaron that the advantage to the QATR-408-The CHAMPS Technique  was that he could practice at his office with a souvenir bat, or where he practices his putting with a sand wedge. I produced a YouTube video, shown below, that  demonstrated what I refer to as the Bunt-Type Chip Shot in my training facilities. The key to the Bunt-Type Chip Shot is that this uses the exact same wrist action in golf shots from tee-to-green.

The reasons that the QATR-408-The CHAMPS Technique I thought would work for him is that Aaron has a well-established muscle instinctive to perform QATR-408-The CHAMPS Technique elements, just like he did in the batter’s box. The only difference is that this is on the tee box. Just by using a simple kid’s souvenir bat at the office, Aaron could refine these instincts for his golf game. Think of this practice exercise as a great Ergonomic relief exercise from sitting at your desk.

The impact of swinging the arms has a tremendous health benefit. It increases blood flow and takes stress off your lower back. And better yet, you are working on your golf game at the same time. Just remember what Tom Cruise did in the movie A Few Good Men. By just swinging his bat, he solved the CODE RED case in the movie.

The only request I made of Aaron was to provide me with a field assessment of using the QATR-408-The CHAMPS Technique on the golf course.

Results of the Test Pilot for The CHAMPS Technique under Actual Conditions

Last Monday, 09Sep2019, Aaron supplied me with a text message of his performance with the QATR-408-The CHAMPS Technique. Below was his actual transcript:

The QATR-408-The CHAMPS Technique provided me with a way of using my baseball swing and confidence it provided to not only break into the 90’s, but actually break 90 for the first time in my life. I was able to remove my biggest obstacle in golf, the golf ball. In the past, my practice swings were nice-and-easy, but once I got behind the golf ball, my swing wasn’t smooth.

I was able to move from trying to hit a golf ball to just swinging my hands. By putting everything up and into my hands, I felt more control over my golf swing. I wasn’t performing anything different than what I would have been doing in my baseball swing.

My typical score is 108. But with The CHAMPS Technique, I was able to shoot a score of 89. This technique allows me to use my baseball-type swing to play my best round ever. The batter’s box kept my focus on my hands and how I was setting my wrists. The biggest advantage was keeping my golf swing in reference to my hands and how they work naturally in the golf swing.

I would’ve shot 85, but old habits are hard to break, with just three weeks of working with The CHAMPS Technique. But Chuck’s Technique allowed me to break 90. The biggest benefit of this technique was the confidence that I felt just swinging my hands and elbows. The real upside of using the T-BONE Technique is that it kept my golf swing compact and in my hands, by using my toe for my target line and swing path. I finally got a handle on my golf swing.

The T-BONE Technique that Aaron is referring to is how the wrists are preset using Kinetic Tape that forms a ‘T’ on back of the trail hand. The bottom of the ‘T’ tracks back along the golfer’s toe line.

The Golf Baton

In lieu of using a kid’s souvenir bat for my virtual practice session, I prefer to use what I call a Golf Baton. The Golf Baton is 22- inch section, cut (using a hacksaw) from an old golf club with an attachable weight that can be placed on the Golf Baton for using the Overload training technique, as shown below. DO NOT use a weight plus the shaft and training grip that exceeds 20 percent over the weight of your heaviest club in your bag (excluding your putter).

Be sure to wear eye protection when cutting the 22- inch shaft section off; and especially when re-gripping your clubs.

This Overload Technique is how batters warm up in the On Deck Circle with the donut weight. The batter is simulating their swing sequence using a weighted bat. Because the Golf Baton is only 22- inches long, it can be used almost anywhere to work on QATR-408-The CHAMPS Technique.

This was the same technique used by Colonel George Robert Hall, who was held for over seven years at the Hanoi Hilton as a POW. For over seven years, Col. Hall used a simple stick to virtually play golf to maintain his sanity. Not only did he maintain his sanity, he maintained his four handicap. My interview with Col. Hall is in my tool bar above. It is well worth reading to show golf is really a mental game than a physical game.
