Next week’s Coming Edition of:The QATSPY® GOLFER’S Inside-the-Leather Sport Page PRESS BOX with an Interview With Coach Bobby Hall

I sat down with Coach Bobby Hall, Former Head Football Coach and Athletic Director of Madison Central High School, in Madison Mississippi. In our interview, Coach Hall stressed the importance of kids being involved in multiple sports. Coach Hall believed in the importance of cross-training in a young athlete’s mental and physical development.

His approach supports the theory behind the impact of the KIX-FITTER Technique.

The Positive Impact of KIX-FITTER

The major issue with applying mechanics and techniques we learn during golf lessons, or coaching sessions, is being able to execute them, much less trying to retain them. Here’s the major issue with the typical coaching approach in sports. If these mechanics and/or techniques aren’t tied or related to our instinctive motor-skills, we won’t be able to perform nor retain them.

Here’s another issue- We don’t play golf with the same part of our brain that we use to practice golf in the backyard or on the range. What is even more discouraging is accounting for all of those premium hours we spent practicing, without having results on the golf course.

I can guarantee the golfer this one thing- They may practice golf using their conscious mind, but once they step foot onto the golf course, they’re playing golf with their subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is where all our instincts are housed. If your golf swing isn’t instinctive, you’re not going to have it available to you on the golf course.

It is hard to sit down at the 19th hole and try to compare your score with the hours spent in practice and training to improve your golf game, with little to show for it on the golf course. The real obstacle isn’t the amount of time we put into our practice sessions; it is it comes down to how we are taking advantage of our natural instincts and permanent motor-skills and FIT our golf swing in with these.

Fine-Tuning the Fine Motor-Skills with the KIX-FITTER Technique

So if we use our subconscious mind where our instinctives, or fine-motor-skills to preform 90 percent of all our task with, why not use our subconscious mind to train with in the backyard, or better yet, where we practice our putting? Great question! Either method gives you more reps than going to the practice range where we don’t always engage our subconscious mind, because of all the distractions.

I even produce a YouTube Video of me in my training facility performing the KIX-FITTER Technique of Syncing and Presetting my wrist just hitting the Bunt-Type Chip shot, below. These are the elements the golfer uses whether on the tee box or around the green.

Here a fundamental truth about permanent fine motor-skills- Our fine motor-skills are established before the age of 10 or 12, at the latest. If you are going to become a child prodigy in academics, sports, or the performing arts, this is the time-frame you are going to have to develop these fine-motor-skills. This is the every reason why getting kids involved sports is so important. You can also find out any learning disabilities in your child.

Now let’s say for instance, you picked up golf late in life, like a lot of people have. How do you make up for those formative years and become a single-digit handicapper? You’re not totally out of options. You have an ace in your hand, or should I say in your wrists as I shown in my YouTube Video, above.

Most of us have swung a baseball bat with a parent, grandparent, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, or friend while growing up before the age of 10. Just from swinging that baseball bat in the backyard, you perform a form of the KIX-FITTER Technique. You have everything you need to develop your own KIX-FITTER Technique Kinetic-Instinctive-Cross-Fitter.

What is the KIX-Fitter Technique and How Can I Benefit From It?

Here’s why the KIX-Fitter Technique is important to you and your golf game in the pursuit of lowering your handicap and your frustration level. I mentioned motor-skills that are instinctive movements, we don’t even think about doing these, which is essential. This is the Kinetics part, or how the body naturally moves.

Last thing you want to do on the golf course is to think. When a golfer takes a practice swing, which I encourage, they aren’t thinking, instead they are actually getting a feel for the golf swing and the Kinetics in the golf swing. Here’s a great example of why the golfer wants to take a practice swing. i.e., Have you had a bad shot and taken a mulligan and hit the second shot the way you wanted to hit the first shot? The reason is, the first shot you were thinking, and the second was instinctive.

Instinctive are those set of ergonomic maneuvers we perform without even thinking. In what I refer to as the CHAMPS Golf Swing Technique, the golfer is performing two key maneuvers that are key in the baseball/softball swing called-

  • Dorsiflex (Sync) is a dominant wrist maneuver, similar to preparing to throw a baseball pitch inside the strike zone, as shown in Figure No. 1.
  • Pronation (Preset) is a lead wrist maneuver, similar to how a batter sets up their baseball swing, like in Figure No. 2, into the Lock Position. Figure No. 2 is particularly interesting, because it is a time-lapse photo comparing the golf swing to the baseball/softball swing. Comparing a baseball swing to the golf swing was my final project for a Kinesiology Project that I did. It is a major part of my coaching process. Why reinvent the wheel especially since you have the wheel are ready.

The Importance of the CHAMPS Golf Swing Technique

If the ESPY Ergonomics of Sync, Preset, and Yaw, is the (WHAT), then the CHAMPS Golf Swing Technique is the (HOW). If you’ve ever swing a baseball or softball bat in the batter’s box, you’ve got this; this is the FITTER. Essentially there is no difference between the baseball swing and the golf swing as I found out doing my final research paper, you just have to refine the motor-skills slightly and control the lower body. You want to coil with your lower body instead of glide.

The only big difference is mental; we, as golfers, take a baseball from waist level, moving at 60 mph plus and throw the ball on the ground, so we think everything changes, but in fact it hasn’t. The golfer just has to reconfigure and FIT their golf swing in with their baseball swing and change our approach to the golf club itself.

Have you ever had a golf coach to draw an outline of the clubface onto your dominant palm? For a right-hander (RH), that’s their right palm. The right palm is the clubface that the golfer wants to bring straight back.

The left thumb represents the shaft of the golf club for POWER. The shaft of the club is just the extension of the RH golfer’s left forearm. The only focus for the RH golfer is on their right palm and left thumb. Everything in the golf swing is predicated on the RH golfer’s right palm (SPEED) and left thumb (POWER), by the Sync and Preset maneuvers.

What’s significant about the Bunt-Type Chip/Pitch Golf swing is that you can put in reps right where you practice your putting, DAY or NIGHT! You are getting the same practice reps as if you are on the practice range, or better yet, the golf course. This ESPY Golf Swing Technique uses the same motor-skills regardless if you are on the tee-box hitting a 280- yard drive or around the green hitting a 28- inch chip shot.

One point to make about the golfer’s wrists is that the wrists aren’t where the golfer would wear a wristwatch, as that’s the lower forearm. The golfer’s wrists actually consist of two pads toward the heel of the palm, called Thenars (Hypothenar and Thenar); refer to Figure No. 3 below.
