Golf Swing Tips- Proper Wrist Action in the Golf Swing to Sync the Elbow

David Duval in an interview he did with Charlie Rymer on Golf Channel, David Duval demonstrated a series of golf swing tips involving presetting the wrist action in the golf swing. Charlie Rymer referred to this wrist action in the golf swing as That Wrist Thing. The golf swing sequence of presetting the wrist action in the golf swing sets up 80 percent of the golfer’s golf swing mechanics with one maneuver. In the ESPY Golf Swing Coach, this wrist action in the golf swing is the Sync/Preset elements.

The main objective for a right-handed golfer is to preset the wrist action in the golf swing to allow the golfer to sync the right elbow with the shoulders to gain a tremendous mechanical advantage, as shown below. This allows the wrist, forearms, and arms to synchronize with the upper and lower body. If there is one theme that a professional golfer emphasis the most, it is synchronization of the arms with the upper and lower body.

Sync/Prset wrist action in the golf swing

On The School of Golf episode last night, 28Nov2017, Martin Hall demonstrated some important golf swing tips on how to sync the elbow used a technique by Bobby Jones, Sr. This included pressing right elbow toward the left elbow to initiate the downswing from the top position.

Martin Hall to demonstration of the elbow press golf swing sequence technique used a balloon that was placed between the upper arms (arms) at address. Martin took the club up to the top of his golf swing with the balloon remaining between the arms. At the top of the golf swing sequence, Martin explained how he wanted to press the balloon with his right elbow toward the left elbow before dropping the golf club. This also creates lag in the golfer’s swing.

Martin Hall explained that he DID NOT want to squeeze the balloon with both elbows, just applied pressure with his right elbow toward the left elbow. Martin explained that this was how Bobby Jones wanted to feel in order to initiate the down swing to drop the elbow back inside and to his right side. This was the same golf swing tip that Arnold Palmer gave the president before a Pro-Am.

The Advantage of the ESPY Golf Swing Sequence

The advantage of the ESPY Golf Swing sequence is the Sync/Preset maneuver initiates the golf swing from the address point, this allows the golfer to be proactive, like what is used in the baseball-type swing. Sync element allows the right-handed golfer to sync their elbow with the their right side during the Syn/Preset into the Lock position. The wrists and forearm after the Sync/Preset should look like the illustration below. Then the Preset element allows the golfer to preset the wrist action in the golf swing and lock the right elbow into place.

The advantage of the Sync/Preset maneuver is it allows the golfer to develop majority of their golf swing mechanics on the front end. When the golfer get to the top of their swing, they just have to STOP, DROP, and ROLL, like the FIRE DRILL. The elbow is already in the proper position to drop back with their right side. The golfer doesn’t have to press forward with their right elbow toward the left elbow with the Sync/Preset maneuver.

The key to the Sync/Preset elements are the golfer’s Hypothenars, shown below is the pivotal component in the Sync/Preset. The Sync/Preset element sets the turbocharger in the golfer’s right forearm, the Palmaris Longus Tendon, or what I refer to as the Palmer’s Tendon. This tendon is shown below. Most golfers can actually see this tendon on the medial (inside) part of their lower forearm. This is a raised area just above their wrist area.

Palmaris Longus Tendon, or Palmer's Tendon

Elbow Sync Technique Arnold Palmer gave to President

The golfer after the Sync/Preset maneuver of the wrists action in the golf swing wants to see their wrist in the Lock Position before taking the club handle to the top. The left Hypothenar, left ring knuckle, and right Hypothenar sets this Palmer’s Tendon. This syncs the right elbow with the golfer’s right side using the Palmaris Longus Muscle.

A Recommendation for your Golf Game:

I would like to recommend an interesting radio program that I regularly listen to from my home state Arkansas on my I-Heart Radio app on KARN 102.9 FM station, out of Little Rock, AR. They air a golf show called Arkansas Fairways and Greens, at 7:00 AM CT each Saturday morning, hosted by Bob Steel, and co-hosted by Jay Fox and Charles Crowson. Bob occasionally as has his guess Alex Myers with Golf Digest and Ron Sirak with Golf Channel. I was interviewed on his show about my book, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach. This show is worth tuning into for golf news and information.

Jay Fox is an Administrator with Arkansas State Golf Association that discuss amateur golf and rules of the game.
