Golf Swing 101- A Golf Swing Technique for Power and Clubhead Speed
If there’s one bone in the golfer’s wrist that is critical to both the baseball batter and the golfer, it is the Hamate Bone. What highlighted the Hamate bone’s importance was the Warren Morris story on ESPN’s 30 for 30, The Walk Off. Baseball players are more susceptible to injuring the Hamate Bone than golfers, mainly because of the forces involved in hitting a 95-mph fastball.
The Thenars and batting gloves can suppress and absorb some of the forces generated from the baseball’s impact with the bat. The speed of the pitch coupled with the bat’s swinging speed generates a tremendous amount of force that the batter must absorb. The reason for Warren Morris’ injury is that the protrusion on the Hamate bone called the Hook was broken. This requires surgery, such was the case with Warren Morris’ injury.
This injury usually occurs to the lead wrist, which is important to both the batter and the golfer. During my interview with Warren Morris, I mentioned to him, that if a baseball batter or boxer is going to injure their wrist, it would be to the Hamate bone. In the boxer’s case, the impact area is usually between the pinky and the ring knuckle that is aligned with the Ulna Bone. This is where the Hamate Bone is situated.
(Diagramming the Effective Golf Swing)
NOTE: The following description is in reference to the right-handed golfer.
In the diagram above, the golfer can see how the Sync/Preset forms the Delta Technique, using the wrist action in the golf swing. The Hook on the left Hamate Bone is synchronized with the golfer’s right elbow. Presetting the wrist action in the golf swing, the golfer can engage a powerful component in their golf swing, elbow and their subconscious mind.
The golfer’s subconscious mind can be engaged by the golfer forming Delta with their right forearm/elbow, shoulders, left arm/forearm/wrist that allows the golfer to develop the power and clubhead speed. These are two components that every golfer searches for in their golf game.
The golfer’s subconscious mind is where the muscle memory and motor skills are stored. This is the Extrasensory component in the ASPEN Golf Swing Coaching System. We may very well practice using our conscious minds, but I can assure you that we will play golf using our subconscious minds on the golf course.
The Syncing/Presetting of the golfer’s right elbow with the left wrists will allow the golfer to lock their right elbow with their right side. This was a golf swing technique that Arnold Palmer gave to President Eisenhower before a Pro-Am. Arnold Palmer noticed that the President’s right elbow was separating from his right side on the practice range, which prevented the President from developing the maximum power and clubhead speed he needed.
The Nick Faldo Preset Drill YouTube Video
There aren’t many golf videos that I would recommend for golfers to watch and study, but Nick Faldo made a great YouTube video entitled: The Faldo Pre-Set Drill – Perfect Top of Backswing Position that demonstrated what I refer to as the Sync/Preset/Lock golf swing technique that is the basis of my book, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach. Nick Faldo’s video and my book focus on presetting the wrist action in the golf swing. I include a copy of my book with a series of instructional sessions along with a sleeve of Almost Golf Balls®. You can order Almost Golf Balls® from Liberty Health links I provided below in this article.
I was giving a golf session a couple of months ago where the lady was trying to understand the fundamentals of the golf swing. Once I demonstrated to her the Sync/Preset/Lock golf swing technique, she made a considerable improvement in her control and developed more power, and more importantly, improved her confidence.
Caddyshack Be the Ball Quote
What was critical for her and other students is syncing the right elbow and presetting the wrists, to complete 80 percent of the golf swing. The only other two components left to complete were just taking the handle of the club to the top and dropping the handle of the club back down.
The biggest part of making consistent golf shots is developing the golfer’s confidence. Ninety percent of golf is the golfer’s confidence, and that is part of the golfer’s subconscious mind. One of the best quotes about the importance of the golfer’s subconscious mind is the Be the Ball quote from the movie Caddyshack, where Ty Webb- played by Chevy Chase mentioned to Danny Noonan- played by Michael O’Keefe– I’m going to give you a little advice. There’s a force in the universe that makes things happen. And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball. The force in the golfer’s universe is the golfer’s subconscious mind.
The golfer can experience the Power of the Force while driving down a highway. While this is an unsafe condition, it does occur for short periods of time. This is what the golfer wants to develop in their golf game. While driving along a scenic highway, the driver’s subconscious mind takes over all the driving tasks because driving is so instinctive, like second nature. The driver doesn’t even remember driving past certain landmarks or stretches of the road. Their conscious mind re-engages and the driver wonders how they navigated their way along the route. This is exactly what the golfer wants to develop in their golf swing.
This situation is referred to as Driving Hypnosis. While Driving Hypnosis is unsafe for driving a vehicle down the highway, it works great for driving a golf ball down the fairway. You want to be like Wade Boggs standing in the batter’s box and just focusing on the ball.

Operation DOG TAG
Sports, such as golf, along with fitness and an exercise regimen that includes yoga, has been proven to be a great Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for trauma victims. Veterans and those who have experienced a traumatic situation where the mind has been traumatized and disrupted can use golf and yoga to help re-establish connection and pathways in the brain. Golf also provides an excellent opportunity for trauma victims to reconnect in a social setting to develop a dialogue without the pressures of clinical visits.

ESPY Golf Swing Coach- Rhythm Without the Blues
ESPY Golf Swing Coach- ESPY Golf App Develops the golfer’s Rhythm w/o creating the golfer’s Blues. The ESPY Golf Swing helps the golfer establish the correct wrist action in golf swing demonstrated by David Duval in an interview with Charlie Rymer on Golf Channel.
Also, learning The ESPY Golf Swing Coach process is an excellent way to develop natural Rhythm without experiencing the Blues in your golf game to build confidence; learn how to take your baseball-style swing from the batter’s box to the tee box.

Time-lapse photography that I reviewed during my Kinesiology Xerox Box Golf Research Project compared the golf swing vs. baseball swing and how similar the Sync/Preset wrist action in the golf swing was to the baseball swing sequence.
Here’s the QUESTION: How many times standing in the batter’s box did you think about your golf swing mechanics, techniques, or elements. Your were only focused on the pitch. Why not use the same Outlier technique in golf.
Sir Nick Faldo demonstration of the Preset Golf Swing Technique
One of Sir Nick Faldo’s first golf swing fundamentals that he learned as demonstrated in this YouTube video entitled The Preset golf swing technique. Nick Faldo discussed the WHAT, but didn’t explained the HOW in his YouTube video.
The Sync/Preset Elements in The ESPY Golf Swing Coach explains how to setup the classic golf swing maneuver to place the wrists into the key Lock Position. This was the same golf swing technique used by David Duval during an interview with Charlie Rymer on Golf Channel. These two Videos are probably two of the best Videos to discuss the wrist action in the golf swing.

A Recommendation for your Golf Game:
I would like to recommend an interesting radio program that I regularly listen to originating from my home state Arkansas on my I-Heart Radio app on KARN 102.9 FM station, out of Little Rock. They air a golf show called Arkansas Fairways and Greens, at 7:00 AM CT each Saturday morning, hosted by Bob Steel, and co-hosted by Jay Fox and Charles Crowson. Bob occasionally as has his guess Alex Myers with Golf Digest and Ron Sirak with Golf Channel. I was interviewed on his show about my book, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach. This show is worth tuning into for golf news and information.
Jay Fox is an Administrator with Arkansas State Golf Association that discuss amateur golf and rules of the game.
