The Secrete Hamate Sync/Preset Golf Swing Sequence Maneuver
One of the most important components in golf is speed, whether you’re talking about Formula-1 Racing, NASCAR, track-and-field, baseball, football, basketball, or especially golf. In football and baseball, players are gauged by the 40 yard dash. In golf, the golfers are gauged by their clubhead speed, or Smash Factor. As essential as speed is to each of these sports, acceleration is even more critical.
While speed is the rate of motion, acceleration is the rate at which speed increases. The golfer just doesn’t want speed; they want acceleration. In golf, the golfer knows it is critical to develop acceleration during the golf swing sequence. The next critical component is the timing of acceleration. If the golfer accelerates too fast from the top of their swing, the golfer will lose clubhead speed at impact, and this translates to loss of power.
The wrist action in the golf swing sequence provides the golfer with several components that develop their power, distance, and control. The Sync/Preset golf swing sequence, shown above, in the Lock Position helps the golfer to set up their own turbo-acceleration component during the takeaway swing. To develop the turbo-acceleration, the golfer needs to understand the cocking and un-cocking function of the wrists. The cocking and un-cocking is developed by the Sync/Preset maneuver. This cocking and un-cocking provides the acceleration for trajectory and backspin to the golf ball’s flight.
Acceleration is probably the most inconspicuous and least discussed or understood golf swing technique in the golf swing. There is only one maneuver that the golfer can perform to develop the critical acceleration in the golf swing. This maneuver is called radial deviation. This is the same action used by fly fishermen to develop the ‘S’ shape casting that you’ve seen in the movie The River Runs Through It, with Brad Pitt and Tom Skerritt.
This radial deviation or cocking, shown above, is actually a hybrid maneuver in the Sync/Preset to the Lock, or cock, Position. The Preset element is actually a combination of proration and radial deviation of the left wrist for the right-handed golfer. The mechanics needed to perform the Preset element center on one tiny bone in the left wrist called the Triquetrum (tri-kwe’-trŭm).
Newton’s Third Law of Motion to Help Coach the Golf Swing
In Section 1.8 of my book, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach, I reference Sir Isaac Newton’s third law of motion. This law states an important golf swing fundamental in golf- for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. This means that how and when the golfer establishes each element in the takeaway swing, these elements will be executed in the exact reverse order in the downswing. In other words, where the golfer cocks their wrists will be where they will also un-cock their wrists to boost their acceleration.
Presetting the wrist action in the golf swing by pronation and radial deviation, or cocking the wrists, provides the turbocharged acceleration right before impact; and not from the top of the golf swing, which causes the golfer to cast. Properly Syncing/Presetting the wrists will prevent the golfer from casting the golf club from the top of their golf swing.
Before you can start cocking your wrists, you will have to understand and practice what I call the Sync/Preset golf swing sequence. The golfer will need to know some basic golf swing anatomy. An important distinction in golf is the difference between the golfer’s wrist and the lower forearm. The wrist is not where the golfer would wear their watch or GPS rangefinder. The area where the golfer wears their watch or GPS is the lower forearm and not the wrist. The forearm is what most golfers mistakenly use to Preset their wrist action in the golf swing. This is the wrong thing to do.
Boxing gloves are a great teaching tool to use for the golfer to understand the wrist action in the golf swing and how the wrist should function in the Sync/Preset maneuver.
The Sync/Preset Wrist Action in the Golf Swing, the Hamate Technique
The wrist consists of eight small bones and two muscles called the Thenars (Thenar and Hypothenar). The one bone and muscle that I visualize and focus on in my golf swing is the left Hamate bone. This is a pretty explosive concept.
The reason that the Thenars are important to the golfer is that these are two of the most dexterous and strongest muscles that have direct contact with the handle of the golf club. Even Ben Hogan references the Thenars in his writings. The Hamate is the small triangle bone between the Ulna bone and the head of the Pinky and Ring metacarpal (finger) bones, shown in the illustration below. This one small bone is critical in the Sync/Preset maneuver.
In the right-handed golfer’s case, the golfer wants to Lock, or cock, to set the right elbow, using the Hamate bone, based on the combination of the pronation and the radial deviation movements of the left wrist. The top of the left Thenar will be 80˚ orientated to the lower forearm. The key is to set the Thenar toward the bottom of the left boxing glove wristband. This will Lock, or cock, the golfer’s wrists and right elbow into the Sync/Preset/Lock, or Cock, Position, shown below. This was a maneuver that Nick Faldo demonstrated perfectly in his YouTube video entitled: The “Faldo” Pre-Set Drill – Perfect Top of Backswing Position.”
If the golfer accomplishes this Sync/Preset golf swing technique, then 80 percent of their golf swing sequence has been completed with this Sync/Preset maneuver. The only other thing left to complete is for the golfer to take the handle of the club to the top of their golf swing. Then just drop the handle of the club back down just behind the ball. The Sync/Preset golf swing technique is just that easy.
Golf Swing 101- The Vivekananda Principle of Coaching Golf
But this will take the golfer some reps of running through the Sync/Preset golf swing sequence, before it becomes instinctive. Refer to my article on Golf Swing 101- The Vivekananda Principle. This golf swing sequence and technique has to become instinctive. The golfer wants their golf swing to become instinctive, similar to how they executed their baseball swing while standing in the batter’s box. They are just focused on the pitch or movement of the baseball.
Matter of fact, the golfer can use a self-coaching technique called Apperception to help develop their muscle memory and motor skills needed on the golf course using the Hamate Sync/Preset golf swing Technique. Apperception is where the golfer can take muscle memory and motor skills that they have developed for the baseball swing and apply it to their golf swing mechanics. The Hamate Sync/Preset Technique is so critical that Warren Morris, left-hander, that was on the ’96 LSU baseball team broke his Hamate bone in his right wrist, this would be the left wrist for a right-handed golfer.
This made it impossible for Warren Morris to get base hits other than just bunting himself on base. During the ’96 College World Series game was the first time his right wrist felt a 100 percent during the ’96 baseball season. With one on third, two outs bottom of the ninth, Warren Morris hit his Walk Off Home Run on the right field fence. This became a ESPN 30 for 30 film special. See my article- ESPN 30 for 30, Warren Morris The Walk Off
Hockey players have naturally good golf swing mechanics. An example of this is Brooke Henderson, a member of the LPGA, from Canada. Her father convinced her to switch her pursuit of hockey to golf by his key observation to Brooke, That most golfer’s still have their own teeth by the time they reach 30.
I was able to confirm that the golf swing mechanics were similar, if not the same, as those in the baseball swing during my Xerox Box Golf Research Project. My grandfather, H.Q. Boatright, coached golf by using the sequence and mechanics from the baseball swing. I was able to substantiate his coaching philosophy using time-lapse photos of the wrist action in the golf swing to that of the wrist action in the baseball swing. The comparisons were amazing, as shown below in the time-lapse photos of the golf swing vs. the baseball swing.

Time-lapse photography that I reviewed during my Kinesiology Xerox Box Golf Research Project compared the golf swing vs. baseball swing and how similar the Sync/Preset wrist action in the golf swing was to the baseball swing sequence.
Here’s the QUESTION: How many times standing in the batter’s box did you think about your golf swing mechanics, techniques, or elements. Your were only focused on the pitch. Why don’t use the same Outlier technique in golf.
Sir Nick Faldo demonstration of the Preset Golf Swing Technique
One of Sir Nick Faldo’s first golf swing fundamentals that he learned as demonstrated in this YouTube video entitled The Preset golf swing technique. Nick Faldo discussed the WHAT, but didn’t explained the HOW in his YouTube video.
The Sync/Preset Elements in The ESPY Golf Swing Coach explains how to setup the classic golf swing maneuver to place the wrists into the key Lock Position. This was the same golf swing technique used by David Duval during an interview with Charlie Rymer on Golf Channel. These two Videos are probably two of the best Videos to discuss the wrist action in the golf swing.

A Recommendation for your Golf Game:
I would like to recommend an interesting radio program that I regularly listen to originating from my home state Arkansas on my I-Heart Radio app on KARN 102.9 FM station, out of Little Rock. They air a golf show called Arkansas Fairways and Greens, at 7:00 AM CT each Saturday morning, hosted by Bob Steel, and co-hosted by Jay Fox and Charles Crowson. Bob occasionally as has his guess Alex Myers with Golf Digest and Ron Sirak with Golf Channel. I was interviewed on his show about my book, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach. This show is worth tuning into for golf news and information.
Jay Fox is an Administrator with Arkansas State Golf Association that discuss amateur golf and rules of the game.
Once you learn WHY, you don’t forget HOW!
