Nick Faldo’s Observation on Improving One’s Golf Game, be Your Own Golf Coach
Nick Faldo mentioned some simple golf swing tips at the 2015 Quicken Loans Golf Tournament to help you learn to become your own golf swing coach. This is how the golfer learns to play golf between the ears. The golfer can’t expect to perform on the golf course, if the golfer doesn’t train under similar conditions. The subconscious mind doesn’t work effectively when training doesn’t reflect conditions on the course.
Mental Rule of Golf No. 7 states: The subconscious mind always prevails in conflicts with the conscious mind.
The conflict in Mental Rule of Golf No. 7 states that the golfer’s subconscious mind is always the golfer’s default. If the golfer doesn’t train with the condition that they will be playing under, the golfer can’t develop their muscle memory. If the golfer’s subconscious mind detects any differences between their practice and their playing conditions, the subconscious mind will not default back to their practice or golf lessons but back to their normal routine.
If the golfer wants to see the most significant improvements in their golf game, follow Nick Faldo’s advice- be your own golf swing coach.
Golf Lessons Aren’t the Golfer’s Default
So those weeks the golfer spent hitting balls on the hitting range and taking golf lessons aren’t the golfer’s default on the course. If the golfer wants to improve their golf game, they must develop their own golf swing coach strategy. Using the hitting range and taking golf lessons are great for establishing the golfer’s technique, but this doesn’t establish the golf swing coach strategy until it becomes a default setting in their subconscious mind. There are several factors that negate the golfer’s ability to transfer their practice and golf lessons to the golf course.
One main factor that negates the golfer from developing a golf swing coach strategy is called the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Syndrome. This is where the golfer can practice (a conscious function) flawlessly on the hitting range balls and trying to apply their golf lessons, but their golf game (a subconscious function) resembles very little of either their practice or golf lessons.
One of the main source of the golfer’s problem and disconnect is the effects of their elixir, or their adrenaline. The golfer doesn’t experiences adrenaline that they will out on the golf course. Adrenaline will cause the golfer to forget their training and golf lessons and divert to their natural tendencies, habits are hard to change. If the conditions are different from how the golfer practices, then their training is not the default for the subconscious mind to use. The default is the golfer’s Critical Swing Path, or their muscle memory, that is their natural tendency.
The ESPY Golf Swing Coach APP Default
One of the best ways to become your own golf swing coach is with a process called Apperception, or APP for short. This is where the subconscious mind uses a previous skill to learn and improve another skill. The ESPY Golf Swing Coach APP default allows the golfer to use their muscle memory in executing their golf swing, compared to the baseball swing.
There’s a situation that drivers can experience called ExtraSensory Performance (ESP), where the driver relies on their subconscious mind to take over the majority of the driving tasks. What happens is that the driver doesn’t remember driving by certain stretches of the road like they are on auto pilot, but they are still are capable of driving the vehicle. To develop the auto pilot ESP Driving situation, three conditions must be in place in the golfer’s default:
- Normal and routine tasks and conditions must exist.
- Rely on a high degree of relaxation, confidence, and muscle memory.
- The conscious and subconscious minds are focused on two different situations.
If there is one golf swing coach strategy the golfer wants to develop in their golf game, it is the ExtraSensory Performance.
While ExtraSensory Performance driving is unsafe for driving a vehicle down the highway, it works great for driving a golf ball down the fairway with consistency. The ESPY Golf Swing Coach APP allows the golfer to:
- Take the baseball-style golf swing routine (Sync, Preset, and Yaw) and develop similar conditions the golfer will be playing under.
- Develop a relaxed and confident golf swing based on muscle memory that becomes the golfer’s default.
- Divide the golfer’s focus between the objective, the target, using the conscious mind, and the process, using the subconscious mind. This allows the golfer to become their own golf swing coach on the golf course.
Yogi Berra had a great question about the conscious (thinking) and subconscious (natural tendencies) process in the golf swing compared to the baseball swing- How can you think and hit at the same time?” The matter of fact is, the golfer can’t and shouldn’t.
The Critical Swing Path, or Muscle Memory Default
To simplify the golfer’s muscle memory, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach APP allows the golfer to establish the Critical Swing Path, or muscle memory, using the golfer’s Supinator to Sync, Thenar to Preset, and Brachio-Radialis muscles to Yaw. With these three muscle memory sequences, the golfer can engage their golf swing coach, the subconscious mind, as the default.
