Apperception- A Golf Swing Coach Fundamentals

There is a term called Apperception (or APP) that is the first stage of The ASPEN Golf Swing Coaching Pyramid System. Apperception is where an athlete can use a previous training or performance technique to help the athlete develop, perform, and advance in other sports. This is like the golfer taking techniques from performing the baseball swing to help establish similar muscle memory to execute a golf swing.

Apperception (APP) technique provides a degree of confidence to the golfer who is trying to learn or develop a consistent golf swing sequence. The ASPEN Golf Swing Coaching Pyramid System allows the golfer to bring highly developed skills from the batter’s box over to the tee box.

The enigma in the golf swing sequence is solved when an athlete mentally puts down their baseball bat to grip the handle of a golf club. In the conventional golf swing coaching approach, the golfer convinces him/herself that they have to learn or use an entirely new set of swing fundamentals for their golf swing. But, in reality, the baseball swing fundamentals the golfer has already developed are the basis of the ESPY APP golf swing sequence.

ESPY APP Golf Swing Sequence- Take the baseball-style golf swing from the batter's box to the tee box

Learn to take the familiar baseball swing sequence from the batter’s box to the TEE box by Syncing/Presetting the golfer’s wrists.

The baseball batter in the batter’s box has a huge advantage over the golfer in their static address position. The advantage for the batter is that they are in a proactive set or LOCK Position, shown in the above figure. This is like a sprinter in the starting blocks. The starter gives the command, “Take your MARK- SET- GO!”

Using the Mark- Set-Go Golf Swing Sequence

The ESPY APP baseball-style golf swing sequence allows the golfer to use their address position, just like the sprinter in the starting blocks, just to position the sprinter’s feet, hands, and body. The MARK position is not a part of the sprinter’s set up and golf swing sequence. Once the starter announces SET, then the sprinter sets up their starting position.

I personally do not consider my address position as part of my golf swing sequence. I use the address position just to orientate my club and my body. The SET initiates my golf swing, when I Sync/Preset my wrists. This is a proactive golf swing, rather than a static address position.

Once I Sync/Preset my wrists into the LOCK Position, as illustrated by the batter in the batter’s box, I just have to GO to the top of my golf swing sequence. This MARK-SET-GO sprinter’s approach allows me to break my golf swing sequence into three parts, Sync/Preset, Take-up, and Drop. I think of my LOCK position as a batter in the preset position in the batter’s box.

This causes the golfer’s conscious mind to FOCUS, instead of THINK. The golfer, who starts thinking, freezes and loses the feel for their golf swing sequence. The golfer draws a blank. The golf swing sequence is a subconscious process and not a conscious process. Syncing and Presetting my wrists is the first maneuver in the ESPY APP golf swing, and establishes 80 percent of my golf swing.

Caddyshack- Be the Ball Quote to Build a Better Golf Swing Sequence STOP THINKING

The ESPY APP golf swing takes a tremendous stress on my mind and body and allows me to focus on the ball or target area. Probably the best golf swing fundamentals came from a quote in the Caddyshack movie called Be the Ball. This covers the four golf swing fundamentals:

I'm going to give you a little advice. There's a force in the universe that makes things happen. And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball.

Caddyshack– Be the Ball quote: (Ty Webb- played by Chevy Chase mentioned to Danny Noonan- played by Michael O’Keefe) I’m going to give you a little advice. There’s a force in the universe that makes things happen. And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball.

  • Utilizing the force in the universe that makes things happen- (The golfer’s subconscious mind)
  • Get in touch with it- (The golfer’s muscle memory)
  • Stop thinking- (Use the golfer’s conscious mind to focus, instead of thinking)
  • Let things happen- (The golfer’s simplistic sequence)

Be the ball- (Focus the golfer’s conscious mind on visualizing the results)

A Recommendation for your Golf Game:

I would like to recommend an interesting radio program that I regularly listen to from my home state Arkansas on my I-Heart Radio app on KARN 102.9 FM station, out of Little Rock, AR. They air a golf show called Arkansas Fairways and Greens, at 7:00 AM CT each Saturday morning, hosted by Bob Steel, and co-hosted by Jay Fox and Charles Crowson. Bob occasionally as has his guess Alex Myers with Golf Digest and Ron Sirak with Golf Channel. I was interviewed on his show about my book, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach. This show is worth tuning into for golf news and information.

Jay Fox is an Administrator with Arkansas State Golf Association that discuss amateur golf and rules of the game.
