How to use sport of golf as a Homeschool Physical and Mental Exercise Component by taking your baseball swing to build a golf swing in a relative short time frame

By: Charles W. Boatright

Sport of Golf, Provides an Excellent Homeschool Athletic Curriculum on an Individual Level Without the Risk or Injury

In a Homeschool setting, sports are just as important to your child’s development in regards to physical and mental health as any curriculum is in school that even the parents can take part in. But most sports are geared toward a team participation, but not golf. Golf can be practiced and played on an individual level now since we are having to shelter at home, or a team after this Pandemic is over.

Golf is an unique in that it can be an individual or team sport. Even practice sessions can be geared toward competition which is actually the best means to practice on a self-coaching approach. Even in my practice sessions, that I perform where I practice my putting (see my FREE YouTube Video below), I developed The 405- Training Drill that provide similar condition as performing on the golf course which is essential, especially if you video tape yourself.  Golf is safe in reference to injuries, especially head injuries. Golf is perfect sport for the Homeschool setting.

Kid’s clubs are very inexpensive to purchase. Even some golf stores has preowned clubs to get kids started. There are special practice balls that kids can use that doesn’t cause personal injuries or property damage that kids can use in their backyard or open field that will allow them to hone their skills in their backyard or garage. I cover these special golf balls in my YouTube Video. These practice ball only go a 20% the distance of an actual golf ball and they can float.

Hint to Parents or Guardians:

Here’s one mental constraint the golfer has to adapt to in order to improve their golf game:

This one thing I can guarantee the golfer, You may very well practice your golf swing and take golf lessons using your conscious mind concerning the WHAT, but I can guarantee the golfer that once they step foot onto the golf course that they will be relying totally on their subconscious mind. The subconscious mind runs the show when it comes to HOW on the golf course. This is the reason The 405- Training Drill is an important component to a child’s practice sessions, that I have outlined below.

I have attached SECTION 7.0 from my book The ESPY Golf Swing Coach that details the 405- Training Drill:

7.0   The 4O5 Training Drill

7.2     To execute a consistent golf shot, I developed the 4O5 Training Drill. This drill develops muscle memory, using the Delta technique. This technique allows the body to assume an athletic posture of a baseball batter in order to develop the sprocket mechanics. The muscles used in the baseball swing are similar to the muscles used in the golf swing, including the lat, ab, pectoral, deltoid muscles, and especially the Palmaris Longus Muscle/Tendon that is actually visible in most people, shown below:

7.3     The objective of the 4O5 Training Drill is to establish a twenty-foot Drop Zone (DZ), where four out of five golf shots must fall. If more than one of these five shots misses the drop zone, the golfer must start over at the tee box. This repetition helps golfers develop muscle memory for the ESPY Golf Swing under simulated pressure. This type of training is similar to a scrimmage game in football. While the scrimmage does not replicate exact game-day conditions, it comes as close as possible to actual conditions.

7.4     During the 4O5 Training Drill, I use five regular white golf balls for putting and for chipping and pitching inside 20- yards of the pin. Then for full golf shots, I use what I call a MAXFLI golf ball. MAXFLI golf balls are thin, plastic-shelled balls, with a high-density foam core. These golf balls are formed with dimples to give them realistic flight characteristics. MAXFLI golf balls offer my dog a tantalizing treat to play with and to chew. They are colored yellow and orange, so you won’t mistakenly confuse them with regular white golf balls.

7.5     There are several advantages for using a MAXFLI golf ball. One advantage is that it behaves just like a regular ball, but without the range or threat of damage. MAXFLI golf balls travel about quarter the distance of a regular ball, up to a 65 yards or approximately a 1:12 ratio. The MAXFLI golf balls will not cause damage to property or be a hazard to people or pets. I would recommend that you use MAXFLI golf balls in your garage ONLY with a backstop type net, like I have in my training facility. MAXFLI golf balls are ideal for your backyard. After work, you can go directly to the backyard and start training. This is a great way to get aerobic exercise, while spending time with the family and playing with the dog.

7.6     I use these MAXFLI golf balls for tee and approach shots. Then in the next step, I replace the MAXFLI golf balls with regular golf balls for the chip, pitch shots, and putting like I did in my FREE YouTube Video. The putting area is a four-foot radius, marked by a five-gallon bucket. I use the 4O5 Training Drill to help set up the 8-10 Rule, where eight shots out of ten total shots must hit the drop zone. This is a statistical analysis in actual play. If you double the 4O5 Training Drill, you will get 8-10, which is an 80 percent accuracy rate. Professional golfers usually can hit 78% of the fairways.

When there’s a conflict between the conscious mind, how the golfer typically practices, and the subconscious mind, how the golfer will perform on the golf course, the golfer’s subconscious mind will win the face-off or duel. If your golf swing isn’t instinctive you won’t have it on the golf course.

Golf- Perfect for Homeschool

Working with a Student using THE QATSPY Golf Swing

There are very few athletic activities that the Homeschooling programs can incorporate into their curriculum. Most sports, such as baseball, football, softball, basketball, soccer, rugby, and tennis, require the formation of teams, officiating, and can also expose students to various injuries. Golf is a self-regulating sport based on a Gentleman’s Code of Honor.

The Sport of golf is an excellent and a safe sport that homeschooling programs can use to develop character, and promote fitness and health in young people including developing problem solving and following and adhering to a discipline routine. The lessons learned from the sport of golf can allow the homeschooling student to reach their full potential in all areas of life. The homeschooling students can use golf to develop character and to instill sportsmanship of respect, perseverance, faith, and confidence in their life.

Equipping homeschooled students to play golf doesn’t have to be expensive. Homeschooling students, along with parents, can form a partnership with local churches or other organizations to secure low-cost or, in some cases, free golf equipment. Most resale stores, like Play It Again Sports, Goodwill, or The Salvation Army, have economical starter sets of golf clubs for the homeschooling student to start learning and playing golf.

With the increasing development of golf technology in equipment, most golfers have a spare set of golf clubs in their garages and storerooms that are not being used. The golfers can donate surplus clubs to local organizations, like churches, and receive a tax deduction for the donation. Please check with your local churches about setting up the opportunity to match golf clubs with kids.

Churches can reallocate the golf equipment to local, certified homeschooling programs in their area. The sport of golf provides homeschools with an excellent athletic program that can allow homeschooled students to either participate on an individual and latter on a team level year-round once this Pandemic comes to an end.

Golf provides a great opportunity for homeschools to develop tournament leagues. This can be accomplished with the help of golf course personnel and/or churches. I have developed Operation Dog Tag to assist homeschools in setting up a golf program.

Also, each state has a golf association that I would recommend that homeschooling programs get in contact with for support and to get involved with golf tournaments. Also, each state has the P.J. Boatwright Fellowship program that young golfers can apply to. Mr. P.J. Boatwright, Jr. was a distance cousin. I know one Director of the State of Arkansas Jay Fox (501) 455-2742, that can assist you if you like in Arkansas.

THE QATSPY® that carries the US WINGS® A-2 Leather Flight Jacket collection is an excellent leather jacket that I use as my sport jacket for several reasons one is sanitary to define against the CORVID-19.

THE QATSPY® A-2 Leather Flight Jacket is based on the original U.S. Military Jacket that we also supply to the U.S. Military. Have you ever wonder why The U.S. Military selected selected the A-2 Leather base on its ability to defend against virus and bacteria from the 1918 Spanish Flu. Our jackets can be wiped down with diluted dish washing soap (1 Teaspoon) to 8 oz. of water on a daily bases if needed.

NOTE: Both cotton and wool fabrics provide an excellent breeding ground for bacteria and viruses.

If you notice, that construction of the A-2 Leather Flight Jacket that we carry in my Online Store meets U.S. Military Specs has the following features that are great to prevent the spread of the CORVID-19:

  • Leather to protect the pilot against fire and contamination.
  • An elastic band cuff and waist band to prevent disease from getting onto the clothing.
