The Odd Couple in Golf

Davis Love III and Tommy Gainey are the odd couple in golf, with one using classic golf swing fundamentals and the other using a baseball-style swing. How can two golfers that are an odd couple in golf be in the same article? There are four reasons that come to my mind when comparing these two golfers.

  1. In golf, a number is a score that matters and not one’s age.
  2. Consistency is about classic golf swing fundamentals.
  3. Using your confidence to improve your golf game.
  4. Understanding how to use your APP.

In Golf, a Number is a Score that Matters and Not One’s Age

Davis Love III is 53 years old and was leading at The Greenbrier Classic, by 7- under on the first day. After Friday, Davis Love III will be in the next to last group, playing at the Greenbrier on Saturday. With great understanding by Davis Love III  of classic golf swing fundamentals, fitness training, and conditioning, Davis Love III still enjoys competing on the PGA Tour. Another important area is breakthroughs made in Kinesiology. Davis Love III also understands the importance of teamwork by serving as the 2016 Ryder Cup Captain.

The major advantage of consistent, classic golf swing fundamentals is that the golfer can tailor their fitness routine to fit the lead elements and maneuvers in their golf swing. This not only maintains the golfer’s power and speed that Davis Love III has, but, more importantly, fitness prevents injuries as we age.

I’m 59 years old and still maintain a strict fitness and exercise regimen weekly that includes my CASPER Workout Program. The CASPER Workout Program is listed in my book in Section 20, based on the golf trainer home gym setup. I also insist on walking the course with my bag in tow, three to four times per week. I hear golfers mention that they ride and don’t walk the course. Every time you give up doing something physically or mentally, you lose that capability. I feel better now than I did when I was 39. One reason was the hip replacement surgery for a rare disorder I developed during my childhood, A RARE DISEASE, IF MISDIAGNOSED, CAUSES SEVERE DISABILITY and CHRONIC PAIN.

Consistency is about Classic Golf Swing Fundamentals

The main reason why you want to develop a consistent golf swing based on classic golf swing fundamentals is to tailor your fitness program. My book, The ESPY Golf Swing Coach, is based on classic golf swing fundamentals. These three (E) ergonomic lead elements are (S) Sync, (P) Preset, and (Y) Yaw. The Sync element was a technique that Arnold Palmer gave President Eisenhower at a Pro-Am, as noted in an article in Kingdom Magazine.

Syncing the elbow and Presetting the wrists allows the golfer to use classic golf swing fundamentals to prevent injuries to their lower back, wrists, forearms, elbows, and shoulders. The Sync, Preset, and Yaw are lead elements that both Ken Duke and David Duval demonstrated on Golf Channel. Even Charlie Rymer referred that David Duval’s wrist preset as ‘That wrist Thing,‘ or what I refer to as Presetting the wrists.

Using your Confidence to Improve your golf game

If Davis Love III exemplifies the classic golf swing fundamentals, Tommy Gainey typifies how the golfer can use an almost automatic technique in baseball. The baseball-style swing develops the golfer’s confidence. I don’t know too many baseball batters standing in the batter’s box that look at a 95-mph fastball who think about their swing mechanics or techniques. First thing, there’s not enough time for the batter to think. Second, thinking interferes with your tempo and rhythm.

Yogi Berra had a great question about hitting and thinking in baseball, How can you think and hit at the same time? The answer is, you can’t!

The ESPY Golf Swing allows the golfer to take their baseball-style swing from the batter’s box to the tee box, like Tommy Gainey does. Tommy Gainey, who goes by the nickname “Two Gloves,” uses a baseball-style swing in his golf game to provide him the confidence. Nothing replaces a golfer’s confidence. See Tommy Gainey’s interview in the YouTube video below.

The baseball swing vs. the golf swing is more similar then dissimilar. If you look at the time-lapse photography that I reviewed while writing my book, the golf swing is similar to the baseball swing. You see two definite similarities, particularly with Syncing the right elbow, in the right-hander’s case, and Presetting the wrists in both swings.

Understanding how to use your APP

In my Email (espygolfapp@gmail.com) and Website (espygolfapp.com) addresses, I use the abbreviated term app. The term app is significant in that it represents Apperception, which means a process of using a well established skill from one activity to learn and apply to another skill and activity.

ASPEN Coaching System

My grandfather, H.Q. Boatright, developed the ASPEN coaching system in 1927 that my book is based on that allows the golfer to take their baseball swing from the batter’s box to the tee box. Using five coaching techniques- Apperception, Sequence, Prep/Performance, Extrasensory, and Neuromuscular process helps to develop a confident golf swing and game.
