Understanding the Wrist Action in the Golf Swing with Boxing Gloves

The wrist action in the golf swing, as demonstrated by David Duval, is probably one of the most overlooked components by golfers. But the wrist action in the golf swing has the most variables. The wrists can behave like universal joints in the golfer’s swing. It took me years to master the contribution and role that the wrists play in the golf swing.

It wasn’t until my grandfather (H.Q. Boatright) used an unusual golf training technique apperception, or app for short, that I finally mastered the biggest component in the golf swing, that is how to control the wrist action in the golf swing. The boxing gloves that are illustrated below are positioned as if the boxing gloves are placed on the handle of the club. This helped me to identify the lead elements that properly set the wrists in the CAM and CAM-OVER maneuvers. The wristbands on the boxing gloves are the key focal points for the golfer.

Boxing Glove Wristband Used to Set The Wrist

The proper wrist action in the golf swing is controlled by each end of the wristbands on the boxing gloves. These two points set over and under two important muscles, the Supinator muscle and the Thenar muscle. The natural maneuvers in these two muscles help control the universal movements in the wrists. There are six maneuvers that the wrist and forearm can perform, and two of these the golfer needs to focus on are:

  • Supination– (CAM) Rotating the palm outward. This allows the elbow to sync with the shoulders; this was a golf tip that Arnold Palmer gave to President Eisenhower at a Pro-Am, described in an article in Kingdom Magazine.
  • Pronation– (CAM-OVER) Rotating the palm inward toward the body. This does two things; locks the elbow with the shoulders and locked the thumb onto the proper swing plane. This was demonstrated perfectly by David Duval to Charlie Rymer during an interview on Golf Channel. Charlie Rymer was so intrigued by this wrist action in the golf swing that Charlie referred to it as That Wrist Thing.

The Boxing Gloves for Training Technique and Exercise

The golfer can use boxing gloves not only for training but exercise purposes also. The golfer needs to learn to trade in their golf glove and golf bag for a pair of boxing gloves and a punching bag. If the golfer would place their hands in the same orientation as the boxing gloves shown in the above illustration, they can set their wrists. First, Supinate with the Supinator muscle at the top of the right wristband (for a right-hander golfer). Second, pronate the bottom of the left boxing glove wristband with the Thenar muscle, then you have just completed the proper wrist action in the golf swing, or what Charlie Rymer referred to as That Wrist Thing.

Also, an important component of a golfer’s exercise regimen should include a punching bag regimen. The boxing bag regimen improves the golfer’s stamina, forearm and wrist strength, and mental focus. Probably the biggest component is the golfer’s focus. This allows the golfer to get in touch with their subconscious mind, where the golfer’s muscle memory is located. Muscle memory establishes the proper wrist action in the golf swing.

Remember the Be the Ball Quote from the movie Caddyshack:

(Ty Webb- Chevy Chase to Danny Noonan- Michael O’Keefe) I’m going to give you a little advice. There’s a force in the universe that makes things happen. And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball.

Be the Ball quote was added to the scrip later, and now is quoted during numerous rounds.
